Auchencairn Initiative business has been dominated by the possible acquisition of Rascarrel Forest. After a bit of a slog and no small amount of controversy, our bid to be allowed to purchase the forest has been approved by the Director General of Forestry Commission Scotland. The details of the process can be found at:

Needless to say we are still a long way from making the purchase as we have approximately 18 months to raise the necessary funds. There is no guarantee whatsoever that we achieve this. However, the members of the Initiative and the Forestry Working Group (set up by the Initiative and Community Council) are actively pursuing possible funders as well as researching other community based forestry projects. We would think it strange that the Scottish Government would promote such a scheme without there being some means of funding being available.

Brian Maxwell and his team continue to run the Country Market every month and it continues to be fairly busy. Thanks to Brian and his team for this considerable effort. It certainly doesn’t happen on its own!

The new play area at the bottom of the village is being well used and everything is in place except for a few items of signage which will be completed in the next month or two. Sadly there have been further acts of minor vandalism to the dyke which is frustrating for everyone as any repairs must be funded by the Initiative.

Heuchan House businesses continue to be busy and are a credit to their respective proprietors.

The Auchencairn Web Site is still very active with visitors from all over the world. It is proving a particularly useful resource for people researching family history. Jim Holland, Will Marshall and Brian Maxwell are planning a revamp of the site in the near future.

Will Marshall was co-opted as a director during the winter and has been proving an invaluable member of the team. One of the first projects he undertook was the production of the Auchencairn Mugs which have been selling very well. They are available in the village shop and from Initiative Directors.

The Hugh Paton Path is being extensively used and Roy Wilson’s new map leaflets are very much in evidence in the hands of walkers.

If anyone has any questions the Initiative Directors are listed below:
