The following two photographs were sent to the History Society by Eileen Cook of Dumfries. Her grandfather was Thomas Johnston. He used to live in Auchencairn with his wife Kathleen and children Sarah, Robert (Eileen's father) and Winifred. The photograph of the brake is taken outside the then Commercial Hotel in Auchencairn. He kept his horses between the back of the Hotel and the Hass Burn. The building is now a private house but hasn't changed much with the passage of time.

The second photograph shows him with his bus in St Andrews Street, Castle Douglas. Thomas moved to Dalbeattie in the early 1920's where he continued in the coaching business.

AHS extends thanks to Eileen for her family photographs and recollections.
