The Forestry Commission proposes to sell Rascarrel Moss forest (168 hectares - about 400 acres) and under latest legislation must offer the first chance to buy to the local community. Auchencairn Community Council has commissioned Auchencairn Initiative on behalf of the community to examine the viability and options of such an enterprise.
A feasibility study and potential business plan are being prepared by professionals for the community. This has been funded by a grant from the Big Lottery.
As a precondition of such a sale under the Scottish Land Scheme the Community Council must inform the community about the details (thus the public meeting) and thereafter carry out a ballot to ascertain the local view on any proposal. At the meeting the professionals engaged to undertake the studies will present their findings.
THE PUBLIC MEETING WAS HELD AT 7.30PM ON MONDAY 8TH DECEMBER 2008 IN THE MURRAY HALL, AUCHENCAIRN.
Community Council Chairman Jim McCrae said " It Is vitally important that as many people as possible attend this meeting. There are a lot of very important issues to go over and the Community could be making a big mistake to not at least examine the possibilities of this once in a lifetime opportunity."
There was a good attendance with many questions being posed after the presentation. It was agreed that support for the proposal should be put to public ballot t be held after further information on the feasability and business plan had been completed and published for the community to review.
