Hermitage Ensemble Concert PDF Print E-mail

7.30pm on Tuesday 1st May heralds a concert by a Russian male choir, The Hermitage Ensemble of St Petersburg in Auchencairn Church. Follow link below for details.

Russian people have always possessed a particular musical sense and Russian choral music holds a unique place in the musical culture of the world and especially of Europe - due in no small measure to the special traditions of the Russian Orthodox Church.  For many centuries choral music was the most highly regarded genre in the musical culture of Russia. The most famous Russian secular composers, such as Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, believed it was their duty also to write sacred a capella music.  However, following the 1917 Revolution, Russian spiritual music was censored in Soviet Russia.  For nearly 70 years it remained inaccessible to a wide audience and, as the years passed, was almost forgotten.

In recent years the masterpieces of Russian sacred choral music have sounded again in the great halls of Russia and Europe, thanks to professional musicians devoted to this wonderful genre.  So today this music is experiencing a new birth, allowing everybody to re-open forgotten pages of world culture. Russian Choral music fascinates every listener with its beauty and strength.  Even a small ensemble allows an audience to feel all the dramatic and melodic wealth which characterises this music. It leaves nobody indifferent.

The Hermitage Ensemble is a male voice group of four professional singers from St. Petersburg, who specialise in performing choral music from the great Russian Orthodox tradition, enlivened by traditional Russian folk songs and vocal works by a range of European composers.  As part of their 2007 U.K. tour, they will be visiting Auchencairn Church on Tuesday 1st May.  Don’t miss this chance to hear this dramatic and moving music.  Proceeds from the concert will be dedicated to church funds.  The concert begins at 7.30 p.m. and admission will be £6 (£3 for concessions).  As a souvenir of their visit, members of the audience will be able to purchase CDs recorded by the Ensemble just before leaving St Petersburg for this tour.
