Mutehill and Torrs Point

Difficulty rating: Moderate.

Distance: About 3.5 miles

Time: Approx. 1½ hours + time to admire the views!

Map: OS Explorer 312 – NX 681473

·         This is a very pleasant circular walk that follows the eastern side of Kirkcudbright Bay to the cliffs at Torrs Point. Here, there is an excellent view of Ross Island, the Solway Coast and (on a clear day) The Isle of Man.

Please note:

This walk takes you to the very edge of the Kirkcudbright Military Range. There is no need to enter the range for any part of the walk and it is strongly suggested that you DO NOT attempt to enter, even if the red warning flags are not flying.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

The Start point of the walk is situated approx 2.5 miles south of Kirkcudbright and is reached by driving on the main A711 road to Mutehill and taking the minor road that runs along the eastern side of the bay. After just short of a mile the road bears sharply to the left in front of a white painted house. To the right of the house there is a track and an area that is used for parking. With appropriate manoeuvring it is just about possible to fit 3 cars

The Walk.

The route of this walk is very straightforward. Firstly, you follow the track for the whole of its length, keeping the bay to your right hand side until the track eventually takes a sharp right turn down to Kirkcudbright Lifeboat Station. At this point your route becomes the narrow track straight ahead, which is followed for ¾ mile until exiting the wood into a field. Turn right and follow the wall gently uphill to the top of the cliffs. You now have a choice of passing to the right or left of a fence, with the former taking you closer to the edge of the cliffs, but not dangerously so. Whichever route you decide upon it is just a case of following the line of the coast and taking in the views!

You will shortly arrive close to a range observation point where you detour sharp left and walk uphill away from the coast, between clumps of gorse, past a small pond and arrive on a broad track. Turn right and follow the track for ½ mile or so, firstly passing through a gate, descending to a small loch, before arriving at a metalled road. Here, you turn left and follow the road for 1¼ miles back to the starting point. This is a very quiet minor road with little traffic but please listen out for approaching vehicles, especially if walking with a dog.
